The Outpatient Infusion Center teams at Newton Medical Center typically include a doctor who writes a prescription and develops a schedule for infusions, and infusion therapy nurses who actually perform the treatments and monitor the patients while treatment is ongoing.
NMC’s Outpatient Center staff is made up of professionals highly trained in infusion therapy standards. They are skilled at everything from cleaning out ports installed for frequent infusions to keeping children calm during infusions.
Infusion therapy is a type of medical treatment in which medication is delivered directly into the body by a blood vessel, the spinal cord, or a muscle. It is used when oral therapy is not appropriate. Conditions such as swallowing disorders make it difficult for patients to swallow medications and food. Or the prescribed medications would be destroyed in stomach acid, and must therefore be delivered directly. There are a number of applications for infusion therapy.
Outpatient Infusion Center nurses deliver medications such as antibiotics, antiviral and cancer drugs. This type of therapy is also used to ease or manage pain, to increase hydration, or to deliver nutrition to a patient who cannot or will not eat. Therapy for wound care is also available at the NMC Outpatient Infusion Center.
Historically, this type of treatment took place on an inpatient basis, with the patient staying in the hospital and being monitored during the course of the treatment. Physicians practicing at Newton Medical Center encouraged offering infusion therapy as an outpatient procedure. The patient can visit our Outpatient Infusion Center for treatments and leave when the treatment is finished. This gives the patient more flexibility and lowers the hospital’s cost for providing the therapy.
